QUESTION OF THE DAY
WHAT IS THE WAY FORWARD FOR THE GAMBIA?
The government took office on 19 January 2017. The peaceful transfer of power after a breath taking impasse earned Gambia international respectability. Gambians had high expectation that the international community will come to the aid of the country and give a soft landing to the president.
The six months is about to elapse and many Gambians are asking what the way forward is after months have already been spent without agreeing on how the country is to be governed. What is needed now is for government and people to focus on concrete proposals for constitutional, institutional and policy reforms that should give rise to the proper management of the country. What is anticipated now is nationwide consultation on the key aspects on the reform agenda of the new leaders to be discussed and a consensus built on how to ensure their realization.
