ECOWAS has an opportunity to initiate measures to facilitate a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Niger. Any confrontation will only lead to the disintegration of Niger. This is no longer the era of the cold war where force is utilized to create sphere of influence.
Ecowas must be seen to be playing a role to preserve the integrity of Niger and maintain a channel of communication with its current leaders. Competent negotiators must be recruited to engage the coupists in Niger and members of the former government that they overthrew. They must be encouraged not to allow their countries to head to disintegration and violence. It is the people of Niger who matter. They are the only ones who decide who should manage the affairs of their country.
