QUESTION OF THE DAY

The world must be questioning whether Gambian human rights defenders are still unable to exercise their role in holding government accountable for human rights violation. Nobody should be under detention for more 72 hours without trial in The Gambia. This is the dictate of the Constitution of The Gambia which used to be quoted ad infinitum to expose the impunity which was customary under the Jammeh administration.

The Barrow administration came to power promising that there will be zero tolerance to impunity and that detention without trial would be a thing of the past. The current detention of military personnel without trial does not help the human rights image of the government. Such a practice should come to an end if the government is to keep to its promise to the electorate. Foroyaa will see whether the return of the president from Mecca will be followed by prisoner releases, especially of those who were detained without trial.
