Readers would recall that the Spanish prime minister had travelled to a number of African countries including The Gambia to discuss bilateral relations. The key issue was legal migration.
A memorandum of understanding was signed after the visit of the prime minister aimed at facilitating the employment of Gambians in Spain. It was made clear that Spain will offer positions of employment and the department of labour of the government will find out who is to be recruited to go to Spain.
Very recently a delegation came from Spain with the aim to establish the modalities to implement the agreement. It is unfortunate that the delegation had gone back without holding a press conference to update the media on what has been agreed. The Ministry responsible for employment should call a press conference to sensitise the public on what to expect from Spain. It is crucial for the population not to be left behind. No false expectation should be raised.
