Presdent Adama Barrow, the candidate of Coalition 2016 made a clear commitment in his manifesto that all media related laws that were inimical to freedom of expression will be repealed within six months. We are now heading to eight years since President Barrow assumed office and none of these laws has been repealed and that includes the law on false publication and broadcasting.
Instead of repealing the obnoxious law, which was enacted under the rule of ex President Yahya Jammeh, he is now applying it. Foroyaa had said before that we cannot rely on the goodwill of the President to safeguard freedom of expression, but on laws designed for that purpose. A democratic minded president should be ready to take all sorts of punches from all sides rather than weaponise the judiciary against political opponents
