It appears that the Presidential Campaign has started with abuse of incumbency continuing. Many people have been asking Foroyaa whether with this trend the President would carry out electoral reform. Our answer is simple. In 1996 many parties were banned from registering to contest elections. When it became clear that the banning in fact made alliances possible the ban was lifted before the 2001 Presidential elections. A government which is confident of the support of the people will always accommodate electoral reform but one which is afraid of the people will always resist electoral reform until it knows that if it fails to do so it would lose more popular support. In that case it must take the lesser risk of electoral reform to cover up it weakness. The future will tell how events would unfold in the Gambia. ]]>
