By Muhammad Bah Hon Bintanding Jarju, National Assembly Member (NAM) for Foni Brefet, told deputies at the National Assembly on Tuesday, 24 August, 2014 that the country cannot make any progress if electricity is lacking. In her contribution to the adjournment debate, the Foni Brefet NAM said the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) is going through a difficult period in providing electricity for the country. She said NAWEC needs enough resources to provide electricity and which it does not have presently. Hon. Jarju said there is need for institutions that owe NAWEC to immediately pay their debts as it is very expensive to provide electricity. Hon. Fabakary T. Jatta, majority leader and NAM for Serrekunda East, said despite the complaints regarding the lack of electricity, NAWEC is still doing well. He said the country has been suffering from electricity problems since after the breakdown of the NAWEC power station in Banjul in the 1970’s. He said it was after 1994 that electricity supply in the country increased covering large parts of the country. “NAWEC is doing everything to provide electricity,” said the majority leader. Contributing to the issue of social security entitlements, the majority leader said this is something that people always confront him on. He said those who are young and energetic cannot claim for social security payments as this is meant for workers who have retired. He said social security is a fund and not a bank.]]>
