The 2023 Gambia Football Federation (GFF) First Division League is alive and kicking, following the super cup final last Saturday which witnessed reigning champions Hawks FC crushed FA Cup winners Wallidan 2-0 at the KG5 Mini Stadium in Banjul to launch their title defence with a flying start to the season.
Sunday matches saw Steve Biko narrowly beating newly promoted side PSV Wellingara at the Late Ousman Saho Football Field in Old Yundum. Biko defeated Wellingara 1-0 courtesy of Adama Bojang in the 32nd minute. Bojang’s lone goal garnered his side the maximum three points as they fought hard to bar Biko from levelling the scoreline despite creating scores of chances.
Elsewhere in the West Coast Region at the Box Bar Mini Stadium, Brikama United started this season with a defeat to Team Rhino. The hosts lost 2-1 to the visitors after opening the scoring in the 12th minute courtesy of Mustapha Drammeh from a spot kick. Rhino launched a comeback and turned the results in their favour.
Ebrima Sambou equalised four minutes into the second half before Alagie Sallah put his name on the scoresheet in the 52 minute to earn his side the maximum points.
