During the celebration of International Women’s Day, stakeholders have reaffirmed their dedication to advancing gender equality. This year’s theme, ‘Accelerate Action for Gender Equality,’ highlights the urgency of promoting inclusive policies and initiatives.
“I reaffirm my unwavering commitment to continue advocating for policies and programs that uplift all women and girls, particularly those with disabilities. Let us work together to build a nation where every woman and girl can achieve their full potential,” said Fatou Kinteh, Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare.
She emphasized the importance of inclusivity in promoting human rights, noting that the rights of women and girls with disabilities must be protected and promoted. She called for greater solidarity and stronger advocacy to support them.
The event, part of International Women’s Day, was held in Banjul on Friday.
Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul, stressed the need for collective action, stating that the Ministry of Gender alone cannot address these challenges.
“All stakeholders must show solidarity and stand firm in elevating Gambian women,” she urged.
The Gambia’s First Lady, Fatoumatta Bah Barrow, highlighted the importance of commitment to gender equality, linking it to poverty reduction and improvements in healthcare and education.
Karl Frederick, Head of the UN Mission in The Gambia, described the celebration as “a call to recognise the connection between gender and disability, to amplify the voices of those who have been silenced, and to dismantle the barriers that have held back too many for too long.”
He outlined key areas for action, including ensuring inclusive education for all girls, creating economic opportunities that value women’s contributions, strengthening healthcare systems to provide comprehensive and respectful care, and enhancing legal protections against discrimination.
Frederick further emphasized the importance of amplifying the voices and leadership of women with disabilities in decision-making processes, calling on all sectors to take concrete steps toward true gender equality.
