A female referee was last week Friday taken to custody at the Bundung Police Station, Foroyaa Sport reports.
A female football referee, said to be Jama Njie, was said to have been apprehended for allegedly ‘attempting to stab’ a female footballer from demoted Gambia Football Federation Female First Division Red Scorpions Football Club, according to a source.
It is alleged that Jama, who was not on refereeing duty that day, had a knife hid under her clothes which she wanted to use to attack this said female footballer, who plies her trade with the Red Scorpions. However, she was said to have been restrained and after which this female footballer, who is yet to be identified, reported the matter to the Bundung police who later arrested Njie.
This incident occurred twenty-five days after the aforesaid referee got beaten up together with her assistant by the Red Scorpions players during an FF Cup game she was officiating.
The league Disciplinary Committee (DS) reacted by levying a hefty fine, relegating Red Scorpions and its players for 12 months.
The footballer turned- referee has since been granted police bail.
When contacted on the matter, Lamin Camara, the chairman of the referees, said he was not aware of the incident and would not comment on it.
