RAIN AFFECTS 587 FAMILIES, 377 DISPLACED Says WCR Disaster Coordinator

The recent rains in the West Coast of the Gambia have affected 587 families and displaced 377 families across the region, A flooded street in a section of Brikamaaccording to the Regional Disaster Coordinator.

Binta Sey Jadama, speaking to this reporter yesterday, 1st September, disclosed that the floods have washed away some buildings, fences and other valuable household items, adding that five people had sustained minor injuries.

‘Some families are without any food as I am speaking to you, especially in the Jiborroh Kuta area, where most of the affected families have lost their foodstuff and other precious belongings,’ she said.

She said officials form her office have visited the affected families and shared with them their grief, noting that all the information regarding the incidents have been collected by the office and sent to the authorities for any support to be rendered to the victims who are at the moment in urgent need of support from any concerned organization and the government.

Dilating on the magnitude of the floods in the region, she noted that the most affected area is in the Kombo East District where almost all the affected families have lost all their belongings, including foodstuff. She said it is very disheartening to see your fellow citizens in such a way and you could not offer any support to him/her.

The WCR Disaster Coordinator further calls on the people to be very mindful of the floods as they are very risky and urged them to take preventative measures when it rains by staying away from houses and fences which are in bad conditions in order to avoid any disaster.

Meanwhile, this paper was reliably informed that some of the affected areas are Kombo East, Kombo Central, Kombo North, Foni Berefet and Kombo South, which are all in urgent need for assistance.
