The duo are members of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP). They allegedly made commentaries that prompted the police to invite them for questioning, which resulted in their subsequent arrest and detention.

The two have been charged with threatening police officers with violence.

The two declined signing their statements. Momodou Sabally was granted bail with a bail bond of One Hundred Thousand Dalasi (D100,000) while Sheriffo Sonko was released on the same terms.
