The Public Relations Officer of the Gambia Police Force yesterday informed this medium that the police are currently investigating a shooting incident that took place at Wellingara Lower Basic School.

“I can confirm that there was a shooting incident that occurred at Wellingare Lower Basic School, but I cannot give details of the incident because our men are currently investigating it,” PRO Sisawo informed this medium.

The PRO of the Gambia Police Force said when the police received the information, they quickly responded to the scene and recovered the weapon.

When contacted for comment, Mr Louie Moses Mendy the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education said: “It is true that we received such information that a student went with a pistol to school and opened fire while he was in a classroom.”

PS Mendy said the student did not fire the pistol at any student, but instead opened fired in the air and one of his colleagues inhaled the smoke.

“The pistol did not have a live bullet. As a Ministry responsible for Basic and Secondary Education, we are going to release a press statement where we will indicate all that happened,” he said

The information that reaches Foroyaa initially suggested that the grade two student went to school with a pistol and opened fire at his fellow student, but PS Mendy said that it was not a targeted shooting.
