Apart from this joint statement by the UN, AU and ECOWAS, individual statements expressing similar sentiments were issued by the UN Secretary Genearal Ban Ki Moon, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. The Chairperson of the AU Commission, recalling the relevant AU instruments, notably the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, will seize urgently the Peace and Security Council (PSC) on this matter, in order to enable the organ to take the appropriate decisions with regards to the situation in The Gambia.
Meanwhile, President Sirleaf has sent a special message to President Jammeh of The Gambia to accept the election result.
All these organisations mentioned above have expressed their readiness to work closely in assisting the Gambian stakeholders to find the best way towards a speedy and peaceful transition and transfer of power.
The UN Security Council also, in a separate statement, called on outgoing President Jammeh “to respect the choice of the sovereign people of Gambia, as he did on 2 December, and to transfer, without condition and undue delay, power to President-elect Adama Barrow.”
The Council members further called on outgoing President Jammeh to respect the ECOWAS protocol on democracy and good governance and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, notably the rejection of unconstitutional changes of Government, and recalled the relevant provisions of Article 23 (4) of the African Union (AU) Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
