Following the arrest and subsequent incommunicado detention of Hon. Buba Ayi Sanneh, the National Assembly Member (NAM) Hon. Buba Ayi Sannehfor Kombo Central, Foroyaa spoke to the officials of the National Assembly to find out what they are doing to protect one of their members from being subjected to unlawful detention given that it has power to make laws on immunity.

When Hon. Fatou Mbye, the deputy speaker of the National Assembly, was approached, she was asked whether they have done anything in terms of invoking parliamentary immunity for the Kombo Central NAM as is the practice in other countries where a formal request have to be made for such an immunity to be waived before any arrest of a law maker is made. In response, the deputy speaker said this is an administrative matter and thus referred this reporter to the Clerk of the National Assembly.

Mr. Dodou Kebbeh, the Clerk of the National Assembly, responding to the question as to what they have done or are doing to protect this NAM, said this is not his area and cannot comment.

When Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, the Majority leader, was contacted, he said National Assembly members have immunity only when they are going to or coming from sessions of the National Assembly.

Asked whether this immunity could not be extended to require the making of a formal request to waive it before any arrest of a law maker is made, the Majority Leader said he needs to consult with his colleagues for a briefing on the matter as he was just returning from Gabon and is not aware of what had happened.
