Title contenders Medina United FC have closed the gap on leaders the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) to just two points after their back-to-back wins in the second division league with their latest coming on Tuesday against Waa Banjul FC.

Sellou Jallow’s 53rd minute goal through a brilliantly executed free-kick earned Medina a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Banjul-based club in a game played at the Bakau Mini Stadium in Bakau. The win followed on their last Thursday’s 2-1 triumph over Gunjur United at the Box Bar Mini Stadium in Brikama thanks to goal scorers Abdou Jarju and Mustapha Jarju.

The table-toppers were the most in-form team with five straight wins before their lull in form in the past two matches—drawing both of them. The Ferry Boys drew 1-1 against league strugglers Serekunda FC on Tuesday after suffering a goalless draw against Unique Global FC last Friday in week-eighteen.

Their four dropped points means four points gained for closed rivals who capitalised on their slip-up. Medina have now racked up 36 points while GPA garnered 38 points after week-nineteen in the second tier.

Elsewhere, Unique Global won big on Tuesday with a 5-1 triumph over relegation struggling side Essau United at the Soma Mini Stadium in Jarra Soma. The win was their first after a hat-trick of draws in the previous three matches. Essau United on the other hand endured back-to-back defeats after securing consecutive wins in their previous two matches.

The results have put them bottom of the 18-team league table, looking at everyone else above. Although they are on 13 points like the nearest two teams (Latrikunda United and Waa Banjul) above them in the relegation realm, they have conceded (37) more than the rest.
