Intra-party democracy is best tested during this year of selection of candidates for election. Political parties have to address a letter to the IEC to endorse the candidature of a person. This requires the parties to go through a selection process. It is the duty of those who apply for candidature to gauge the degree of fairness of the selection process of the party so that their level of adherence to the principle of intra party democracy will be gauged.
It is a requirement of the Constitution and election laws for all parties to promote intra party democracy. Many parties through their selection process do succeed in isolating some credible candidates who ultimately stand as independent candidates and successfully win a seat as an independent candidate.
Nomination commences today with APP and ANRD required to have their candidates present their nomination forms in all the seven administrative regions of the IEC. Foroyaa will publish the names of these candidates as they appear on a daily basis.
Before the end of the exercise on 25th of March the names of all the candidates of all the political parties will become evident. We will also know the names of the independent candidates who will appear for nomination from 23rd to 25th of March.
