IS THE GOVERNMENT TAKING THE OIL SPILL SERIOUSLY?

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Foroyaa has been following the impact of the oil spill on the socio-economic development and the environment of the people who have been affected so far. There was no sign that the government has made any general mobilisation of an emergency nature to deal with the disaster.

In that respect we have made attempt to contact the relevant governments department and agencies as well as Gam-Petroleum to gather the plan in place to deal with the disaster. So far, we have received only promises from the spokesperson of the National Environment Agency to link our reporter to the authorities who have the mandate to clarify issues of this nature.

The public is kept entirely in the dark as far as the environmental impact assessment is concerned and therefore cannot come to a conclusion on whether something would be done about the problem. The alarm bells have been rung that if the rains become heavy the environmental impact would be worse. We will persist to get into the heart of the matter since life and death issues are at stake.
