QUESTION OF THE DAY
The resignation of the councillor for Kerr Jarga Ward in Jokadu will lead to a by-election. The transition provided a different political environment as fourteen parties struggle to find a space in the political landscape. Elected representatives are likely to re-evaluate their political commitments while National Assembly members have amended the section that could make them lose their seat if they were removed from the political parties to which they were members if they lose election.
The same does not apply to councillors. One should not be surprised if councillors try to influence national assembly members to take a bill to the national assembly to give security of tenure to the elected members of council. Until then one should expect many by-elections as councillors vacate their seats either by election or by resignation. IEC should therefore be well prepared for any eventuality.
