QUESTION OF THE DAY

HAVE YOU WATCHED GRTS FROM 8.30 PM TO 9.30 PM ON 3 JANUARY 2017?

Many people who watched GRTS last night saw the braodcasting of the campaign trail of Outgoing President Yahya Jammeh. This is extremely strange. GRTS gave the impression that it was being neutral and professional by not broadcasting any political messages from the incoming and outgoing governments. Now they are broadcasting the campaign of a candidate who has lost election and is not broadcasting the campaign of the person who has won.

This constitutes a real mockery of common sense. Such broadcasts only undermines the integrity of GRTS as a national broadcaster. One thought that at this material time GRTS would cover matters regarding the inauguration of the president elect and the court case of the outgoing president.

To broadcast the campaign trail of the loser is to unearth the healing wounds of the supporters. This is also a mockery to the supporters of the APRC. What is there to gain by such broadcast except to add insult to injury?

The new director general of GRTS should look at such broadcasts and judge what is to be gained by it. At least the loser should know that showing one’s muscle after losing a wrestling match is a futile exercise.

We hope sanity will prevail as Gambia moves through this transition.
