GOOD FOR DEMOCRACY

87

Since all citizens cannot converge every day to discuss and decide on
matters affecting the nation, trustees must be entrusted to run the
affairs of the nation. Citizens must have control over their trustees;they should be representatives who they have confidence in. This is
why there are elections.
The election of representatives including the president has nothing to
do with friendship, blood relation, ethnicity or religion. There is
only one national treasury. Election based on sentiments does not lead
the nation forward but backward.
Citizens are becoming more and more sovereign, trying to make
decisions based who will best represent their interest rather than on
sentiments, which is good for democracy.
Once more and more citizens become sovereign collectively we will
build a republic of sovereign Gambians who can take the destiny of
this nation into their own hands. They simply have to know themselves,
their country and the world in which they live.
