Gambian International Players Win Liberian League

Gambian internationals Ruggy Joof, Mbassey Darboe, and Catherine Jatta have continued their remarkable Liberian experience, winning a fourth successive league title with serial champions Determine Girls FC. 

Captain Ruggy Joof lifted the converted trophy in grand style on Friday, 12th April 2024, following her side’s 15-1 annihilation of Just FC, with Mbassey Darboe scoring a staggering eight goals in the match with Catherine Jatta also getting her name on the score sheet.

Queen Scorpions captain Ruggy Joof finished the season on a high, as she marshalled the defence to concede the fewest number of goals, and recording the second highest cleansheet in the 2023/24 Liberian Orange Women’s League. Known for her no nonesense defending, Ruggy also added goals to her game this term, netting three times as she won her third title with her team.

Midfield mestro Mbassey Darboe also had a record-breaking season, with a staggering 72 goals involvement for the Gambian sensation. The Determine Girls playmaker scored a staggering 23 goals and registered a monstrous 49 assists for the campaign. Mbassey’s individual brilliance, positioning, and tactical awareness made her a perfect modern-day midfielder. She has won her second league title since joining the Liberian side.

Striker Catherine Jatta was also a revelation, winning her first professional title in her debut campaign with a personal best 19 goals registered to her name, making her the league’s fifth highest scorer. The prolific Gambian attacker, whose varsility sees her operate in midfield in some games, is a vital addition to the reigning champions.

The Gambian trio, who had an incredible 93 goals involvement, will now shift their focus to the CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers tournament to be hosted in Sierra Leone.
