Competing World champion Usain Bolt is every athletes’ dream and Gambia’s Adama Jammeh could 
have that realised in the IAAF World Championship in China.
Track gem Adama Jammeh will be Gambia’s only weapon when he takes to the tracks in Beijing.In what will be his biggest world event tomorrow, 22-year-old Adama is poised for the 200m men race, an event record-breaking Jamaica’s Usain Bolt is eying to snatch gold.
Competing against Bolt is a chance no athlete would want to pass on but the budding Gambian must first sweat it out in the first round heat and at least reach the finals of the event to realize his dream.
On a personal best timing of 20.94 –the lowest of heat six – he competes with heavyweights like Karol Zaleweski (Poland), Robin Erewa (Germany), Mosita Lehata (Leshoto), Daniel Talbolt (Great Britain), Wallace Spearmon (USA), Warren Weir (Jamaica) and Likoúrgos-Stéfanos Tskonas (Greece).
Confidence is a trait never lacking in the youngster poached from the country’s Prisons department, but pressure is inevitably expected to take its toll as he enters the event faced with a herculean task of surpassing the feat of Suwaibou Sanneh, the only Gambian to have reached the finals of a world athletics championship.
Jammeh begins the race in top form after reveling in France, Warri Grand Prix and being part of Gambia’s 20-medal grabbing team in the just concluded Mbour sub-regional championship.
Adama who was visited by Gambia Olympic House’s Breatrice Allen and Gambia Athletics Association President Capi Joof last week, starts his race 11:30am GMT
