The Gambia female team has booked a place in the semis of the ongoing WAFU Women’s football championship after narrowly beating Guinea Conakry 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Sal, Cape Verde. The Gambia had to avoid a defeat in the final game against Guinea who had beaten Sierra Leone 1-0 to qualify and they did just that.

The queen scorpions’ lone goal scorer in the tournament so far, Catherine Jatta, was once again the goal scorer after converting a spot kick in the 82nd minute following a hand call by central referee against Guinea defender. Jatta scored in all three group stage matches, first netting a quadruple in the opener and a goal in the second and third matches.

The Gambia qualified in a tough Group B which included reigning champions Senegal who thrashed the queen scorpions 4-1 in their second match. The Gambia crushed Sierra Leone 4-1 in their group opener.

Goal keeper Matty Manga displayed a solid performance which earned her the Woman-of- the-match. The Gambia had a late scare as Guinea’s free kick in the 90th minute at the edge of the 18 yard forced them to scramble to clear the ball in the penalty box.

The Gambia and neighbours Senegal thus qualify into the semis from Group B.
