Four Youths Arrested for Showing Solidarity With Auditor General

Four young people have been arrested in Banjul after they reportedly gathered to show solidarity with Auditor General Karamba Touray, who was forcefully removed from office earlier today. Among those arrested is youth leader and vocalist Kemo Fatty, an environmental activist known for his public advocacy, as well as a journalist said to be working with Gambian Talents TV. Their identities and whereabouts remain unclear, and the police have not issued any statement regarding the arrests. Eyewitnesses say the group was picked up near the National Audit Office premises shortly after news of the Auditor General’s removal spread.

Police have arrested five individuals, including Omar Saibo Camara, Public Relations Officer of GALA, for unlawful assembly and common nuisance at the National Audit Office, Kanifing.

Those arrested are:

1. Kemo Fatty of Bakoteh

2. Alieu Bah of Brusubi

3. Mamamdou Camara, Jambanjelly

4. Omar Saibo Camara, of GALA

5. Bakary Tamba, Journalist

A journalist from Gambia Talent Promotion was also briefly arrested during the incident but released after screening, while the four remained in custody.

The arrests followed a gathering at the National Audit Office. During which, the GALA spokesperson attempted to conduct a press interview, using disparaging language and inciting colleagues to demand the release of those earlier arrested. This behavior prompted his arrest alongside the others.

Formal statements have been taken, and the suspects have been charged accordingly.

The GPF strongly advises media professionals to uphold journalistic standards and avoid interfering with police operations or engaging in activism under the guise of reporting.

The Police remind the public that unlawful gatherings and incitement will not be tolerated, and reassure citizens of their continued commitment to maintaining peace, order, and the rule of law.

Foroyaa is monitoring developments and will provide updates as the situation unfolds.

As at the time of going to press, the four were reportedly detained at the Kairaba Police Station.
