Press Statement -The Gambia wrestling team won four medals in the just concluded ECOWAS championship held at stade Iba Marr Diop in Dakar Senegal. The team got many by surprise with their excellent performances as four of the five wrestlers representing the Gambia plus coach Sulayman Bah made their debut in the championship.
Sulayman Bah’s charges defied all odds to rewrite history, winning four medals in the individual category for the first time ever, one bronze, two silvers and a gold medal.
Ceesay Jatta alias Boy London defeated Wotna Cana of Guinea Bissau to cling Bronze in the 66kg. Assan Joof alias Sa Thies wrestled down Celestino B Dafa of Guinea Bissau to win gold in the 76kg, Babacarr Mboge alias Arobass won silver medal as he controversially lost to Mouhamadou M Sene alias Selemeley in the 100kg and Dam Sallah alias Sei Sei got silver as he lost to Oumar Kane in the 120kg.
Bayba Financial Services supported the Gambian team financially. The next ECOWAS championships will be held in Niger in September and the Gambia is expected to do well if this team is kept together and given the support.
