By Sulayman Bah Matarr Nyan, erstwhile skipper for Gamtel has switched to Gambian Matarr Nyanchampions Real de Banjul ahead of the start of the new season. Nyang, an Ebrima Sohna-like combative defensive midfielder joined Gamtel cross town rivals over the weekend penning a two-year deal. The 25-year-old, who skippered the Telecommunication Boys to a fleet of successes including winning the Football Association’s title a record four times including participations in the CAF Confederation and Wafu Cups, will add experience to a side so littered with a modicum of talents. The potential departure of midfield pair Bubacarr Trawally and Alagie Bah, Foroyaa Sport understands–reportedly on trial in Germany – will leave Real’s midfield bit gaping and starved of the duo’s unquestionable services. However, the acquisition of Matarr could help fill in the blanks but the hard-tackling player will have to fight it out for a starting place with a towering Samsideen Badjie formerly of relegated Seaview FC. Nyan pictured above on the night of his second-half debut for the senior Scorpions against Tanzania, delightedly told the club site: ‘I am glad to join Real de Banjul as one of the top clubs in The Gambia. I feel like home coming because I was here before going to Gamtel.’ President William Abraham said shortly after the transfer: “Matarr Nyan will add power, maturity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him enjoying his stay with us. He has produced top quality performances at his former club and we hope he does more for us in coming seasons. He is a great signing for us. He is a player with good experience at both club and international level, who will add significant quality to our squad.” Matarr was among a bevy of players released by Gamtel for ‘their behaviours’ after the end of the last league campaign. While, the telecommunication Boys manager wouldn’t be pushed to elucidate explicitly on the reasons for the players shock exit, Gamtel’s coach Tapha Manneh however left the door open for the players’ potential return based on their performances in the nawettan. With Nyang out of his grasp, Tapha Manneh one of the country’s most revered coaches will have to act fast to find a replacement for Matarr to partner spaghetti-legged exciting attacking midfielder Modou Sarr. It would be intriguing to watch Matarr to show what gaffer Manneh is missing when his new club Real, meets Gamtel this season, according to an observer.]]>
