The European Union (EU) Ambassador to The Gambia, Corrado Pampaloni bid farewell to President Adama Barrow yesterday Thursday, 22 August 2024 at State House, and advised for the country to maintain democracy.

“My farewell message is for the Gambia to continue to consolidate the democratic part. It is not an easy thing. Democracy is a difficult thing to achieve and once you achieve it, it is difficult to maintain. It is always a debate in a democracy but that debate is healthy and I think to continue like this, is a good thing,” the EU Ambassador told waiting press officers after an indoor meeting with President Barrow.

“It is a very sad moment for me but I know the legacy we have created together will be strong and stronger in the future,” he said. He advised the country to continue on the path of development and to create jobs and opportunities for women, girls and the youth, as well as to provide safety for the elderly.

Ambassador Pampaloni said he has thanked the president for the good cooperation they have shared for the past four years, adding that they have also talked about what they have done together such as EU’s support to the Gambia in achieving a full transition of the country’s democratic dispensation.

Pampaloni is an Italian national and was appointed ambassador and head of the European Union delegation to The Gambia in January 2021. He has also worked in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and other African countries before his arrival to the Gambia.
