EMERGENCY SESSION ON MIGRATION

45

The National Assembly members are to participate in an emergency session on Saturday to consider the ratification of a Memorandum of Understanding between Spain and The Gambia.

Foroyaa will follow the debate on the agreement with keen interest. It is difficult to predict what the National Assembly members would do and why the agreement is being considered in an emergency session. Such agreements could best be subjected to public hearing to build national consensus on the content.

If the objective is to stamp out irregular migration, those who are vulnerable should be well informed of any measures to be taken in their interest. Some Gambian youths are currently on transit to their destination. Some are already resident in respective European countries without documents.

It is timely that such agreement is being considered. How it will end is still unclear. The future will tell and Foroyaa will amplify what is decided.
