Drivers in Kanifing Municipality have called on the authorities to provide them with proper car parks in the municipality.

The ongoing nationwide road-clearing exercise has affected car parks in Serekunda and Westfield, challenging drivers who used sidewalks as car parks.

The nationwide road clearing exercise is meant to remove unauthorized structures and cars on the roadside.

The drivers lamented that they need proper and standard car parks in the municipality.

The drivers said the existing garages in the municipality are small and improper, adding that this is affecting them.

Speaking to Foroyaa, Sulayman Jarjue, a driver, said the nationwide road cleansing exercise has shrunk the space at Serekunda garage.

‘We used to park our vehicles on the street corners but this is no longer allowed since the clearing exercise begun in KM,’ he said.

He added that the Serekunda Car Park is too small to host all the vehicles that use the garage.

“The exercise has widened the road, but narrowed our garages,” said Amadou Joof.

Joof, a driver who plies around the Westfield area, said they need a proper and standard car park so that they will not park their cars on street corners.

‘We are having a tough time at the moment, as to where to park our cars or pick up our passengers,’ he added.

‘Because the place is very small now,’ he added.

Ousman Gibba, a private car driver, said the lack of car park in the municipality leaves drivers with no option, but to park their cars on the roadside.

‘I know that this does affect the flow of traffic, but it is the only place we can park our cars,’ he said.

He said they need car parks so that drivers won’t affect traffic by parking on the sidewalk.

‘We really need car parks so that we won’t park our cars on the sidewalk and cause traffic jams,’ he said.
