By Fatoumatta K Jallow The collection of garbage in the vicinity of the Wellingara market and schools which started in earnest on 2 September, 2015 has GARBAGE STALLEDceased. The rubbish dump had made some streets leading to the market unusable. Since 2 September, only two attempts were made to collect the garbage, on 2 September, 2015 and 6 September, 2015. Since then nothing has been done. When this reporter visited the place yesterday, she found out that the rubbish dump has not been cleared. The caretaker at the school said the people responsible to clear the dump last came to the place on Sunday 6 September 2015. He narrated that every day he has to stop people from dumping waste there but the people always tell him that they have nowhere to dump their waste. He said the people argue that the problem is not where they should dump their waste because they should have a place for them to dump their waste and the area council should be collecting it regularly. This according to him is where the people believe the problem lies. “We are pleading to the council to help us collect the waste as soon as possible as we can contract disease from it. The odour is very foul,” he remarked Modou Jonga, the PRO of Brikama Area Council, when contacted by phone, said they are trying all their best to clear the waste at the site as it is not the only place they are focusing on because they have other places to clean as well. He said they will do anything possible to make sure the waste is removed from there. Children were seen playing close to where the rubbish is piled.]]>
