As the Operation Sanity Task Force continued enforcing by-laws on anti-littering, business owners along the highway in Old Jeshwang, raised concerns about Kanifing Municipal Council’s (KMC) failure to collect their rubbish.
They argued that the Council has not been collecting their rubbish even though they have been paying their environmental taxes over the past years.
This argument arose between the task force and the people when a pile of rubbish was found along the highway beside dozens of shops and the task force wanted to impose a fine on them.
The business owners argued that they did not dump their rubbish there, rather the rubbish was dumped by residents after the KMC workers left a pile of it there.
The business owners did not end up being fined. However, the task force argued that KMC’s failure to collect the rubbish does not give anyone the right to litter the streets. The task force instructed a KMC truck and group of workers to collect the rubbish and promised to take the matter to the council.
Meanwhile, the task force has fined nineteen individuals for breaching the anti-littering law. The fine imposed on these individuals amounted to about nineteen thousand dalasi.
