REJOINDER
Below is an article written by the Banjul City Council in response to remarks made by Hon. Alagie Sillah National Assembly Member for Banjul North. The remarks were made in an article published by Foroyaa under the caption KMC Spends over D500,000 at every ‘Set Setal’ in Issue No. 84/2016.
POINT OF CORRECTION IN RESPECT OF REMARKS MADE BY HON. ALAGIE SILLAH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY MEMBER FOR BANJUL NORTH DURING THE PRESENTATION OF THE REPORT BY THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SELECT COMMITTEE (22nd -26 June, 2016) ON THE ENVIRONMENT
It has come to the attention of the Banjul City Council (BCC) relative to the Foroyaa publication dated Friday 7th to Sunday 9th October 2016 regarding the contributions of Hon. Alagie Sillah National Assembly Member for Banjul North.
It is of concern to Council that waste under its jurisdiction is frequently collected and a twice weekly routine of systematic collection takes place in each street in the City of Banjul unless and until otherwise which is to say that unforeseen circumstances affects the collection.
As small as Banjul is, waste cannot be left unattended or uncollected for a longer duration particularly when it is claimed that waste is been kept in compounds for 2 or 3 months. For the records, it is grossly misleading and incorrect for Hon. Alagie Sillah NAM for Banjul North to allege that his waste was not collected for duration of seven months.
The biggest revenue generated and realized by BCC is plunged into the Cleansing Services in its attempts to ensure that Banjul is maintained clean and therefore refuse/waste is collected accordingly.
It would be more realistic and appropriate if such allegation is followed by channeling concerns to the authority as a National Assembly Member within the City and stakeholder for that matter. Council is of the view that statements must be backed/supported by facts and not mere speculation. We call on Hon. Sillah to act accordingly and avoid speculations which is not a healthy medium for a development oriented representative particularly during this crucial period.
It is deemed significant and relevant to be just with issues and not to rely on assumptions and deviate from incorrectly saying that waste was uncollected for seven months.
As a native Banjulian of the area with the Deputy Mayor residing in the concerned area, it would have been appreciated to bring to the attention of the council the alleged issue as a national Assembly Member answerable to a party and a citizen of Banjul.
Council wish to reiterate that it had never occurred in the City of Banjul for waste to be left uncollected for seven months. Waste is frequently collected on a street by street basis routinely twice weekly in each street unless otherwise.
We solicit from the General Public to continue referring any report to the offices of the Chief Executive Officer and Clerk of Council and the Cleansing Service Manager of uncollected waste in any given street or locality.
