Residents in the vicinity of the main taxi park in Banjul have decried the dumping of rubbish there.
Some of these residents living at Grant Street, Clarkson Street and Long Street have appealed to the Banjul City Council to stop the dumping of rubbish at the taxi park. The three trailers at the dumpsites were full to the brim and beside them was additional garbage on the ground.
A resident of Grant Street described the stench emanating from the dumpsite as unbearable for breathing. He pointed out that when it rains maggots and parasites are quite visible at the dumpsite.
“Even at a distance you can still smell the bad odour and stench coming from the rubbish dump,” he decried.
A resident at Clarkson Street who lives barely few metres away from the rubbish dumpsite warned that the rubbish poses a health risk to residents in the vicinity.
“This has been here for some years now, and we are really seeking help from BCC through the Mayor to eradicate it totally,” he appealed.
Mayor Abdoulie Bah, speaking to Foroyaa at his office in Banjul called for attitudinal change towards waste management.
He said council has increased the number of trailers from one to three, adding that council empties them when they are full. He however said, “But people will neglect the trailers and throw the rubbish on the ground, which is really not good.”
He said that the council is looking forward in the nearest future to at least build some stalls around the dumpsite, which can be utilized for income generation and pre-empt further dumping of rubbish.]]>
