An Experiment In Democracy

Since the fall of the Jammeh regime, the media have mushroomed, so have political parties grown astronomically. Likewise, the number of presidential candidates, whether independent or party sponsored, has reached unimaginable proportion, posing great challenges to the IEC in terms of resources and logistics.

By Saturday, after public scrutiny of the candidates, the IEC will endorse all the candidates that have met the requirements of the law to stand as candidates. There is also the possibility of the candidates re-aligning themselves, withdrawing their candidature and supporting each other, thus reducing the number of candidates contesting the election and easing the burden of the IEC.

By next week the picture of this unprecedented contest for the presidency will become clearer.
