AFRICAN LEADERS SHOULD TAKE A STAND

55

Citizens of Africa in the diaspora should be protected by all African governments. In the political dialogue between the EU and African governments and the various reports of the US state departments African governments are taken to task for human rights violation. Such observations are usually welcomed by human rights defenders in Africa as pressure to improve human rights conditions in their respective countries. The observance of human rights however should be universal, and African governments should also commence interrogation into the treatment African people are subjected to in the diaspora. It is unbelievable that a Gambian citizen would be deported from the United States to Ghana and the Ghanaian authorities would still accept the citizen of another country sent to another country that is not of its origin. All African countries should agree not to receive any deportee who did not originate from the country where they are deported to. The immigration officers who bring them from such countries must be compelled to take them back. The diplomatic staff of such counties that are deporting them should monitor them and must record every inhuman and degrading treatment so that African governments could file reports on such matters and assist them to file cases in courts of competent jurisdiction in such countries for violation of human rights. The reason why there is universal declaration of human rights is the acknowledgement that human rights are universal and should be protected regardless of nationality, origin, place of birth, religion or any other characteristics. The violation of the human rights of any person anywhere should be the concern of every person everywhere. Foroyaa will monitor the case of the affected Gambian to draw appropriate lesson from it. The foreign affairs ministry will be contacted for more information. They are responsible for the protection of Gambian citizens abroad.
