The Global Youth Innovation Network (GYIN) -Gambia Chapter has commenced a six-week training program for its board members on governance to enhance their expertise on organizational excellence.
The objective of the training is to bring board members abreast with their functions and responsibilities and to ensure the effective execution of their respective roles and responsibilities as board members of GYIN-Gambia.
The training is part of the project “promoting rights and justice in the Gambia,” a project funded by USAID (United States Agency for International Development) and implemented by Freedom House.
Led by human rights activist Madi Jobarteh, the training focused on effective board governance and civil society empowerment. Jobarteh emphasized that as a civil society organization, they are accountable to the people first and foremost, and urged GYIN-Gambia to demonstrate transparency and accountability in all its operations.
Modou S. Joof, GYIN-Gambia’s Board Chairperson, said they have established higher standards for board operations and have strengthened GYIN-Gambia by clarifying their role in supporting the organization’s development.
The training, he said, aligns with GYIN-Gambia’s commitment to youth development and to creating sustainable socio-economic opportunities. By enhancing the governance skills of board members, GYIN-Gambia aims to amplify its impact on Gambian youth and national development.
Mamadou Edrisa Nije, the Executive Director of GYIN-Gambia, said with Freedom House’s assistance, they have achieved a better structure noting that the training will ensure an effective board to drive ‘‘our mission forward.”
The training lays the foundation for GYIN-Gambia’s long-term success in empowering Gambian youth.
The sessions covered the orientation of board members, recruitment strategies, meeting best practices, and policy development.
