The political and social media platforms are tilting towards gross violation of the code of conduct of the IPC and the letter and spirit of the election laws of the country. Political parties have to comply with the code of ethics made under the Elections Act which include a political party or candidate agreeing
a. Not to insult, malign or slander another candidate
b. Not to abuse or engage in the improper use of state resources and property of any state organ for political propaganda purposes
c. Not to carry out campaign activities in public offices or public educational institutions during working hours or hours of learning.
The IPC is also against using inflammatory and defamatory language against political opponents. It is therefore necessary for the political parties in the Gambia to lodge complaints against political parties that are in breach of the code of conduct of the IPC. We hope that political parties will resort to IPC to look for remedies for misconduct against them.
