“They said they were not taken to any hospital or clinic. They were detained with their injuries. One of my brothers, who is abroad sent some money for them to be taken to the hospital,” he said.

Mrs Camara said the police Monday, May 28 arrested individuals who were later released on bail and took them to the Anti-Crime Unit to report, but they were detained and informed that they will be arraigned in court.

Madam Camara said the arrestees were complaining about their health.

“One of them complained of his eyes, that he cannot see properly, another one complained that one of his teeth was broken and it is paining him,” she says.

Before going to press, this reporter contacted the PRO of Gambia Police Force Cadet Assistant Superintendent Modou Musa Sisawo to enquire about the fate of those arrested and subsequently released on bail.

However, Cadet Assistant Superintendent Sisawo said he could not confirm their release on bail.

He added: “The police are trying to make sure that they abide by the 72 hours detention as spelt out in the constitution, so am sure that if their offences are bailable, they must be released.”

Readers could recall that 7 people from Marakissa Village, Kombo North District, were arrested on Thursday, 23 May 2024 during police raids in a compound in CamaraKunda.

Those arrested alleged that they were assaulted and detained at the Anti-Crime Unit of the Police Force.

A one-year and nine-month-old baby’s leg was seen bruised and the mother of the infant alleged that the bruise was caused by the officers during their raid.

“What happened to us on that day was not fair and we want justice to prevail between us and the police,” they said.
