The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) on Tuesday, 24 October informed the press that they will be upgrading their meters nationwide.
Mr Nani Juwara, the Managing Director of NAWEC dwelling on the new system about to be introduced, said: “With the new system, if you buy cash power on your receipt you will see three sets of digits unlike before where you have only one set of digits, that is the token numbers. When you enter the first set, it will clean up the meter, the second set will upgrade the meter and the third set will serve as your normal token number because after entering it you will see your cash power units.”
He said that they have already tested the new process and it is working effectively. He said if any of their customers has any difficulty with the new process and needs assistance, the person can call 1669 or walk to any of their branches.
This process, according to the Water and Electricity Company, would not affect the rate and unit at which its customers buy cash power.
The Management of NAWEC further explained that the process will be carried out in phases and it will start this month. They added that they will commence the process with their staff and then move to the North Bank region, then to CRR, LRR, URR, the Greater Banjul Area and finally to the West Coast Region.
Mr Juwara said the process is meant to upgrade the NAWEC meters, saying it will not affect the rate or charges of cash power.
“We are embarking on this process to clean up all our meters and upgrade them to standard. There are no charges attached to it, we are doing it for free of charge,” he said.
On the speculations suggesting that NAWEC wants to increase its tariff or charges, the NAWEC boss refuted the rumours, saying the process only seeks to commensurate the meters with international standards.
“This process is currently taking place in other countries, we don’t want to be left behind and at each phase, we will inform our customers before we carry out the process,” he said.
