The Gambia yesterday 22nd June 2020 recorded four new COVID-19 cases bringing the total number of cases the country has ever recorded to 41.

“One of the new cases is Lower River Region’s first confirmed COVID-19 case, 2 new recoveries confirmed, after both cases 025 & 027 produced 2 consecutive negative test results, bringing the number of active cases in the country to 13,” said Mr Modou Njai the Director of Health Education and Promotion at the Ministry of Health.

Since the outbreak of the global pandemic, The Gambia so far recorded forty-one positive cases. Currently, there are two hundred and sixty-eight persons under quarantine, thirteen active cases and three probable cases.

Director Njai said all but 5 of the 62 laboratory test results received returned negative for COVID-19, while 4 of the tests came out positive, 1 returned inconclusive (Probable case).

“24 persons were newly taken into quarantine, 6 new people were discharged after testing negative for COVID-19 upon completion of the mandatory quarantine period,” he said.

Njai said most of the newly quarantined were picked from different locations after it was learnt that they have a recent travel history to a country with ongoing community transmission.

“They also include 16 health worker contacts of the recently deceased case (case 037),” he said.
