For 55 years since the Gambia was declared a self -governing territory, the people are generally ignorant of the land tenure system in the country. The National Council for Civic Education should partner with the Ministry of Lands and regional government to educate the citizenry on the land tenure system. Many land disputes are increasing and solutions are not at sight leading to many people taking the law into their own hands. This will not enhance peace.
One had expected the Lands Commission to be a mechanism for dispute resolution in terms of Land cases. Even some National Assembly members who received piece of land have a dispute with a VDC.
It is therefore important for the executive to assess the viability of the Lands Commission and provide remedy should it be found to fall short of expectation.
