The Insurance Association of The Gambia (IAG) on Thursday February 13th 2020, officially introduced the new Standardized Motor/Vehicle Insurance Certificate.
“Standardization of the motor vehicle Insurance certificate is resultant from unending forgery of motor vehicle certificates in the country by unscrupulous persons,” Makaireh Badjan, the president of IAG said.
Badjan said the association came with the decision after series of consultations, to unanimously resolve and come up with a harmonized certificate sheet with highly secure features. He made it clear that customers will not be charged for the new certificate even after a huge investment from motor underwriting Companies.
He urged both the Police and GRA to support their initiative and ensure that only authentic motor vehicle insurance certificates with security features from licensed insurers are accepted by traffic officers.
Abdoulie Sanneh representing the IGP of the Gambia Police Force said the new Standardized Motor/Vehicle Insurance Certificate will enable the Police to reduce the number of unlicensed vehicles plying on the country’s roads as well as minimize road traffic accidents.
“Such technology will enable us to make Gambia safe and more secure and will help Police Officers trace those vehicles involved in accidents,” he said.
Dr. Seeku Jabbi, Deputy Governor of the Gambia’s Central Bank urges Insurance Companies to ensure that stringent controls and measures are put in place to take good care of the certificates. “I wish to assure you all of Central Bank’s commitment in the industry’s agenda,” he said.
He commended the initiative for the contribution towards boosting economic development in the country and said it is in line with CBG’s approval of automatic issuance of the ECOWAS Brown Card Certificate to motorists.
The President of the Insurance Association of the Gambia confirmed that all Insurance Companies in the Gambia have agreed to come up with a uniform certificate and prevent forging of insurance certificates.
