What Is The State Of Constitutional And Electoral Reform?

244

QUESTION OF THE DAY

It is important for the public to know that a law has been enacted to constitute a Constitutional Review Commission which will be charged with the responsibility of reviewing the 1997 Constitution and come up with recommendation for constitutional reform or revision.

The government has to keep the public informed of developments regarding constitutional reform. Questions are being raised as to whether there will be a new constitution, whether there will be a term limit and whether there will be a second round of voting if the contestants have less than 50 percent of the votes in the first round.

These issues require to be addressed to keep the reform agenda on track. Civil society should not be dormant on such issues. These are the issues the media and civil society should take up more vigorously. It is based on such constitutional reforms that electoral reform could follow. We must speed up constitutional reforms so that electoral reform could be speeded up.
