QUESTION OF THE DAY
After the approval of the 1997 Constitution at a Referendum, in the country’ first experience in democratic election of chiefs in the Sami District everybody in the district with a valid voter’s card participated in the election.
The outcome did not favour the candidate of the ruling APRC party. Hence the Jammeh Administration decided to use its absolute majority in the National Assembly to amend the Constitution and provided for the appointment and removal of district chiefs by the President.
One would have thought that under the new political dispensation, the government would introduce consultation with the people in the removal and appointment of a chief until the Constitution is amended to ensure the democratic election of chiefs. Foroyaa will interview the Minister of Regional Government to find out what the Government wanted to do differently in the appointment and removal of chiefs.
