Masanneh Sonko from Nuimi Darsilami in the North Bank Region is searching for his missing son Omar Sonko, who was said to have been picked up on 9th May, 2016, by the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) personnel at the Kairaba Avenue residence of Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), who is currently on trial with 18 other members of his party.
According to the father, Omar works in the Kombos as a commercial vehicle apprentice or purser. He said the commercial vehicle in which his son serves as a purser was hired by the militants of the UDP to transport them to Banjul to attend the court of their leaders and take them back. He said the son was arrested on that very day and has not been seen since then and his whereabouts are not known to the family.
The distraught father told Foroyaa that he has conducted an extensive search for his son by visiting many police stations in the Kanifing Municipality as well as at the PIU headquarters in Kanifing but could not see him.
Omar’s father said he is appealing to the authorities to allow him access to his son and to release him from incommunicado detention.
